How to Care for your Amaryllis
During the holiday season, Christmas is full of sparkle and glam. Everyone is taking the time to have fun decorating thier homes to bring some holiday joy! And what I love the most is how everyone’s homes have their own Christmas identity! Silver and Gold, Who-ville themed, an old fashion cedar Christmas tree, and many many other beautiful options!
But there is an element that can accent any holiday decor style! What do you ask it is? You guessed it….flowers! You are probably thinking ….another article about Poinsettias?….but not this time! Even though poinsettias are a beautiful holiday flower with lots of color options, I would like to suggest something a bit different. Have you ever thought about incorporating amaryllis into your holiday tablescapes?
These beautiful bulbs create a dramatic punch in any decor! But you still may be asking….how do I take care of these? Are they hard? Am I going to kill it? Well, I have all the answers! First, for most, I want to reassure you! These are easy to grow, maintain, and happy in any home! Amaryllis is a tropical bulb therefore a warm home, a sunny window, and some water is all you need!
So let’s get down to the nitty-gritty how to care for these flowers! Here are some guidelines and pointers to be grow beautiful amaryllis in your home!
Bigger is Better!
When you are looking to buy amaryllis bulbs, the bigger the bulb the bigger and showier your flowers will be. Here at the farm, we have a variety of bulb sizes. I absolutely love a statement piece in which the bulb is about 38 centimeters, but I also love the accent of small (20 centimeters) dainty flowers clustered together. So this decision is totally your call!
How to Plant?
If you buy a bulb that is not in a container already, choose a container with no holes in the bottom. Fill your pot enough that only the bulb base is in the soil, Therefore ¾ of the bulb should be exposed. Cover the soil will Reindeer moss or small decorative pebbles. Give it a good watering after it is planted. Do not water till you see at least two-inch of green growth. After you see the bud and the stalk water on a regular basis. Just enough to keep the soil moist.
Controlling Growth…Optional but helpful
These big amaryllis bulbs can grow super tall…sometimes 30 inches tall! And if that is too tall for you there is a method to keep the stem shorter, but still, have a big and beautiful bloom. Mix a ratio of 7:1 of Vodka and water. This will keep your stem shorter and stalkier, but allow the flower to bloom to the fullest capacity!
